RNLI Lifeboat

The children walked across to the River where we met up with the RNLI (Chiswick) Lifeboat team. They were shown the kits and lifesaving equipment they use in the event of having to save someone from the water. They arranged for one of their boats to go along the river and then approached the children. There was much excitement. They learnt about the importance of safety, especially in the water, and what to do and not to do in an emergency.

Chiswick RNLI Lifeboat is one of 4 stations located along the River Thames. They came on line in 2002 as a result of the Marchioness enquiry. They work closely with London Coastguard and respond to anyone in trouble on the River. Chiswick Lifeboat Station has 9 full time staff and 60 volunteers from various walks of life – police officers, paramedics, TV producers, a farmer and school teachers.

The Chiswick RNLI Lifeboat covers from Albert Bridge to Richmond and is the second busiest Lifeboat Station in the country. It is a voluntary organisation relying on public donations to keep this valuable service going.

FACTS ABOUT RNLI:

1824: RNLI founded by Sir William Hillary
Over 141,000 lives saved
95% of RNLI people are volunteers
4,700 volunteer crew and 150 volunteer lifeguards
On average 24 people rescued every day
Over 2009 lifeboat stations in the UK and the Republic of Ireland

The RNLI couldn’t save lives at sea without supporters and support.

The Barnes Montessori Nursery thanked the RNLI team for their valuable time and the school raised £230 from generous donations. Thank you!
